The weekend was perfect. Four of my best high school girlfriends and I took off for a weekend in Top Sail, North Carolina, where we spent every day eating delicious meals, reading, sleeping, and enjoying the beautiful weather on the beach! We took tons of pictures on our beach walk Friday afternoon, and unfortunately my picture-taking after Friday slowed down and I don't have too many more, I'm afraid. But I think Friday's pictures capture the weekend perfectly.
My little baby boy was extremely active the entire trip and I think he thoroughly enjoyed his first trip to the beach.
On Friday night I came down with what we have concluded was food poisoning. I had been asleep for almost an hour when I suddenly woke up with horrible stomach cramps. I ran to the bathroom and began to throw up and stayed locked up for about 30 minutes while my body tried to rid itself of whatever the heck it didn't agree with! It was TERRIBLE. At one point I actually thought, "Am I in labor? Is this labor?!?" I was hurting soooo badly. But after about 30 minutes I stopped throwing up and went to bed. The next morning I was FINE! It was the weirdest thing ever. We had eaten Mexican that night - home made Mexican, though, including burritos, guacamole, and salsa - and EVERYONE ate it, so I concluded that it must've been something I had eaten at the airport on the way to NC. Whatever it was, it got me. But Saturday morning I was 100% better.
The weather was PERFECT on Saturday, even warmer than the day before, so we decided it'd be best if we "got our tan on." So out to the beach we went! Lauren and I (the preggo ones) decided to lounge on the beach while Katie, Ashley and Leslie went on a 4-mile walk to the pier. We watched the surfers and skim boarders and even saw some dolphins. And we got some serious SUN! It felt so great, especially after enduring the last few weeks of crazy cold-then-warm-then-rainy-then-snowy weather in Alabama. Then we went inside, took showers and naps, and decided we'd go out to eat for dinner. We all got ready (for the first time all weekend, ha) and headed to Buddy's, a local seafood joint on the beach, and we enjoyed some shrimp and sweet tea and corn nuggets. We also enjoyed watching Katie tackle a pound of snow crab legs like a pro. Seriously, I wish I had a picture. I love crab legs but after 2 days of relaxation I just didn't think I could muster up the energy to crack and peel and pull out the meat. She, on the other hand, could absolutely take home a prize in the art of crab claw cracking and eating. I am proud to call her my friend. After dinner we headed back to Durham where Ashley and Brian live. We finally crawled into bed around 11pm and had to be up at 5am the next day to make it to the airport on time. We said goodbye to Ashley and hopped on our plane a little later, and we made it back to Birmingham by 11:30am yesterday.
What a much needed getaway. We all agreed that, if we could pull it off, we'd do this at least once a month. It's so nice just to be able to get away sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I missed my Chad and my Mary Ella so much and I was so glad to come home to my family! But it's nice to be able to escape every day life sometimes and just relax with friends. Especially friends you've known your whole life who just "get you." It was perfect. We have already started planning our "We're Turning 30" getaway, and right now we're tentatively planning on Las Vegas. Ha! I'll probably laugh in a few years when I look back on this. But hey, we can dream, can't we?
